Kenya | The Adventurer Safari

In 11 days, this exploratory journey takes you through Kenya?s pristine wilderness and community lands all under the care of a professional safari team. Plan to stay in clean and comfortable lodges, cottages and camps strategically located in the parks and community areas as you engage in genuine interaction with the host communities. Start with the laid back Naivasha area for an intimate bush adventure; cycle or hike or ride a horse then continue to Kakamega forest, part of the once vast Equatorial forest and enjoy days of exploring the dense forest. We then continue to ?Obama land?, the lake side town of Kisumu. Our last destination, the Maasai Mara is a real highlight where the wildlife rituals, intrigues and fascinations are incomparable.

Day 1: Nairobi

On arrival at Nairobi?s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met and transferred to the Gracia gardens guest house , a family friendly establishment, where your room awaits you. For the rest of the day, you may relax and catch up with the time zone. Depending on your arrival time at 10am we will visit the world famous David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Recently featured in the National Geographic Magazine, this encounter will put you a few feet away from orphaned baby elephants that have been rescued from near death situations. As the elephants are fed large baby bottles of formula you will learn about the detailed nurturing of these orphans that are ultimately returned to the wild. We will have lunch at the Utamaduni craft center and then a chance to pick up some local souvenirs. Thereafter, we visit the nearby beautiful Karen Blixen Museum, home of Isaac Denison and made famous in the film, Out of Africa. Return to Gracia gardens for overnight stay. (B)

Day 2: Naivasha

Today, a 2 hours drive through the Kenyan highlands with a stop to get a glimpse of the Great Rift Valley, a magnificent natural trench stretching approximately 3,700 miles from Lebanon into East Africa gets us to Lake Naivasha checking in for lunch at the Lake Naivasha country club set on lush tropical gardens on the shores of fresh water lake Naivasha. Early afternoon at leisure to relax and enjoy the serenity of this resort. Later in the day we undertake an evening boat ride into Lake Naivasha to see the hippos and many colorful water birds. We also undertake a short nature on a conservancy set along the shore of the lake were we get to interact up-close with giraffes, gazelles, zebras and a few more herbivores. Dinner and overnight at the Lake Naivasha country club. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Naivasha

A full day in Naivasha. We have the option of doing a cycling/trekking safari in the nearby Hell?s gate national park. This is best done during morning hours as it can get quite hot in the afternoon. Afternoon spent at the hotel swimming and relaxing. We could also arrange a visit one of the flower farms to get an insight into the vast horticultural industry that is the lifeline of Naivasha. The beautiful roses and carnations produced in this area are shipped to Europe every day. (B,L,D)

Days 4 & 5: Kakamega forest

This morning, after breakfast we start a four hour drive Westwards through rural Kenya with fantastic views of the farmlands and the rural settings. The drive gets us to Kakamega forest arriving in time for lunch at the rondo retreat set deep in this remaining relic of the once vast tropical equatorial rain forest. During our two night stay, we enjoy natures walk in the dense forest in the company of our local naturalist. If lucky, we will spot the rare De Brazza?s monkey. Better still, there are several animals to be spotted including the red tailed and the black and white Colobus monkeys. Birdlife is just amazing with over 330 spp. already recorded. Dense vegetation, lianas, climber and a prolific array of wildflowers are equally wonderful supporting over 400 spp of colorful tropical butterflies. Kakamega area is also home to the Luhya community, one of Kenya?s largest tribes. We take time off to visit the local market and interact with the locals for an overview into their daily way of life. Meals and overnight at the tranquil Rondo retreat.(B, L, D)

Days 6 & 7: Kisumu

Breakfast and depart for a two hours drive to Lake side city of Kisumu overlooking Lake Victoria ? Africa?s largest lake. We check in at the Kiboko bay resort on the shore of the lake with a great ambience. During our two day stay we indulge ourselves in the way of life of the local Luo community. We take up a small traditional wooden boat to cruise on Lake Victoria to see hippos along the shore and Uganda in the distance. We also take a tour of Kisumu town visiting the fish market where we will enjoy the local favorite - freshly grilled Tilapia from Lake Victoria. We also take a guided tour through the biggest market in western Kenya. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of this market that offers almost everything you can imagine. Overnight at Kiboko Bay resort.(B,L,D)

Day 8,9 and 10: Maasai Mara Game Reserve

A 5-6 hours from Kisumu through sugarcane plantations and predominantly Maasai country gets us to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. We enjoy a stunning view of the undulating plains of the Mara from the comfort of our safari vehicle. For the next three days, this is where you can see elephant, buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard, zebra, giraffe, hippo, crocodile and a whole ark-full of other animals. We?ll spend three nights at the Keekorok lodge, with the night sounds of the game and the fresh scent of the earth, grass, and bush around you. The ritual becomes addictive: early morning game drives to watch the waking plains, then back to the camp for lunch followed by a siesta or some time off to update your journal. The experience in Maasai Mara is incomplete without interacting with the locals. We visit a unique Maasai Cultural Village where you get to interact with the community guides, interpreters and elders. On showcase are dances, folklore, fire making techniques and lots of cultural activities that make us realize how different (and yet how similar) their everyday life is to ours. Meal and overnight Kekoorok lodge (B, L, D)
